MountainRose Vineyards has a fascinating history rooted in transformation and perseverance. The vineyard is located in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia and is the first to be planted on land once mined for coal. This unique aspect gives the vineyard its rich, mineral-laden soil, which contributes to the intense flavors and aromas of their wines.
The dream of MountainRose Vineyards began with David Lawson, who had a passion for farming and winemaking from a young age. Despite his parents’ initial skepticism about making a living from farming, David pursued his dream. He attended Virginia Tech, where he took a semester off to work in a winery, solidifying his desire to become a winemaker.
David convinced his parents to partner with him in establishing Wise County’s first winery. They began the arduous process of restoring the soil, adjusting pH levels, and planting cover crops to create the ideal conditions for grape growing. The first vines were planted in 1996, and the winery was completed just in time for the first harvest in 2004.
The name “MountainRose” has its own unique history. It refers to a seventh-generation family heirloom rose passed down through the Lawson family. Traditionally, roses in vineyards serve as indicators of potential diseases, acting as an early warning system to protect the vines.
Today, MountainRose Vineyards is known for its award-winning wines and picturesque setting. The vineyard has expanded to include a wedding event space and a pavilion for receptions, making it a popular destination for both wine lovers and those seeking a beautiful venue for special occasions.
It’s truly inspiring to see how the Lawson family’s dedication and hard work transformed a piece of reclaimed mining land into a thriving vineyard and winery.
